INNOVATE series - supported by AusIndustry, IP Australia, Enterprise Connect, Austrade, the Queensland Government and the Logan Office of Economic Development

The first seminar was held on Friday 26 June at the Brisbane Technology Park, and featured exceptional speakers and a wealth of useful and practical information.  The seminar was for manufacturers, companies value adding and business advisors.  The speakers provided insights on how to succeed in a difficult market through diversification, innovation and design,

Peter Sullivan from Deloitte Digital was a brilliant and refreshingly down to earth presenter.  Peter talked about the importance of 'the business creation pipeline' and said that people growth precedes business growth - so let people create their own destiny and support your people in bringing creative, innovative ideas to fruition.  Peter emphasised the importance of using free online resources like Youtube and Twitter.  The culture at Deloitte Digital and also the Gore organisation were provided as examples of organisations that actively create innovation cultures (Gore is a US based business; see http://mitworld.mit.edu/speaker/view/1021 and click on the Terri Kelly video).

Austrade's director Cheryl Stanilewicz discussed the huge opportunities in southeast Asia for Queensland companies.

Neil Sullivan, another dynamic and captivating speaker, introduced his company NOJA Power Switchgear who started up in 2002 with a global vision and now have an annual turnover of $40 million, and export to more than 70 countries.  Neil discussed the importance of having the "born global" philosophy, especially in manufacturing, because the Australian market is too small so companies who wish to grow have to export.  Neil talked about the valuable assistance and business introductions provided by Austrade, and how engaging with Austrade's services became an essential part of NOJA's business growth and ultimately, success.  Neil made the interesting and humourous suggestion to "think of the Australian Government as a 30% shareholder in your business, and use their assistance!"

Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in innovation and business growth.  Phone the AusIndustry hotline on 13 28 46 to put your name on the list for future seminars or email hotline@ausindustry.gov.au.  Alternatively, contact Rowena Bell-Bradbury on 0418 982 092 or email rowena.bell-bradbury@innovation.gov.au.
