New advisory centre to improve Pacific infrastructure

The Pacific Infrastructure Advisory Centre is a joint project of the Asian Development Bank, AusAID, NZAid (New Zealand's International Aid & Development Agency) and the World Bank.  The Asian Development Bank will establish and manage the Centre from the ADB Sydney office at a cost of $2.4 million.

The Centre will assist in improving infrastructure and services in Pacific Island nations.  Functions will include analysis, planning and technical assistance to help Pacific countries develop sustainable infrastructure and services that support national development goals.  The Pacific Infrastructure Advisory Centre is the first key component to be provided under the new Pacific Region Infrastructure Facility (PRIF - announced in August 2008).

The PRIF aims to coordinate donor assistance to develop and maintain critical infrastructure in the Pacific.  PRIF partner agencies will provide up to $200 million for infrastructure development in the Pacific over four years.  The Advisory Centre will produce strategies, policies and project designs which PRIF partner agencies and other stakeholders can support.  This will help ensure that assistance provided through loans, grants, and private sector participation is effective and meets the needs of Pacific Island people.

If you have what you think might be an applicable technology, innovation or expertise and more importantly perhaps, an interest in getting into the international development and aid sphere, keep an eye on developments with this new Centre.  There doesn't seem to be a website as yet, but the ADB link (google search result) seems to provide the most comprehensive information about it, and there is a contact name and email provided.

Update 30 June 2009 from ADB contact, Mr Robert Guild:   The Asian Development Bank/Pacific Infrastructure Advisory Centre are establishing a roster of infrastructure specialists who would be available for short-term assignments on basically an "on call" basis.  The Centre will only be able to engage individual consultants for these assignments, not firms.   The first assignments are expected to start rolling out in the third and fourth quarters of 2009.  The likely focus areas will be transport, water/sanitation, power/energy, and urban development, though related and complementary disciplines are also possible.
